Here are the range of employment opportunities on offer to any NTA-NET JRF awardee.
NTA-NET stands for National Eligibility Test conducted by National Testing Agency to determine eligibility of being recruited as Assistant Professor. The top rankers are awarded Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) making them eligible for prestigious scholarship to pursue research-oriented activities.
All those students who qualify this exam are deemed as NET qualified and become eligible to apply for Assistant Professor in any College or Institute (Government or Private) across the Nation. The biggest advantage is that there is no age limit requirement for Assistant Professor.
That can bring in respectable amount of remuneration. Also Ph.D holders are exempted from NET qualification in all the universities operating in the purview of UGC.
If you are conferred a JRF certification then an added advantage you would get is that you will be preferred over the candidates who possess just NET qualification. But it also depends upon your intrinsic qualities as well as your performance in the exam and interview.
Another career option available with NTA NET JRF candidates is Ph.D. or M.Phil. You can pursue your higher studies while earning a stipend. UGC has not mandated Ph.D as an essential qualification for Assistant Professor, however with growing numbers of NET qualified candidates Ph.D often provides competitive edge when it comes to final selection.
There are many Universities which offer a stipend to the Ph.D. students. BUT you should keep in mind this thing that the stipend for doing Ph.D. is provided to JRF awardees only in many Universities. There are some universities which also provide a stipend to the students having NET qualification for pursuing their Ph.D. BUT that is the University’s own whim whether it wants to extend stipend to NET qualified candidates or not.
JRF certification carries a validity period of 3 years only while your NET qualification would stand for a lifetime. Therefore, in order to avail the benefits of JRF certification, you need to get yourself enrolled in some University for pursuing higher education.
Since your NET qualification is for a lifetime, therefore, you can apply for Assistant Professor anytime in your life.
PSU opportunities:
Public Sector Undertaking organisations such as Miniratna, Maharatna, Navratna companies often comes up with opportunities such as Management Trainee, Associates and many entry level positions where Freshers with NET qualification become eligible to apply for. Their compensation are also one of the best as per Industry standards.
Now let me come to the procedure for applying for the job. Once you have qualified NET along with JRF, you need to follow certain basic steps:
- Shortlist few Universities/Institutions according to your preference.
- Keep a check on their website in order to be aware when the vacancies are rolled out.
- When the vacancies are rolled out, apply for the same.
Now there are a few things which you must be aware of. First and foremost, the vacancies are less in comparison to the number of candidates clearing NTA NET JRF every year. And more vacancies cannot be generated until or unless more institutions are constituted. Therefore, you will have to take it with a pinch of salt that clearing NTA NET JRF does not guarantee a job. Though vacancies are less in comparison to the number of NTA NET qualifying students, new opportunities are also springing up in the economy.
